As the city slowly begins to stir, I\u2019m tying my apron, clocking in, and preparing myself for a day that will be filled with caffeine, conversations, and countless espresso shots. Being a barista at TNC is more than just making coffee \u2014 it\u2019s about creating a rhythm, a flow, a comfort zone for the regulars and newcomers alike.<\/p><p>My shift begins with prepping the machines. Cleaning the steam wand, checking the grinder settings, warming up the espresso machine \u2014 everything needs to be perfect before that first cup is served. The first wave of customers usually includes students heading to early classes, night shift workers ending their day, or gym-goers grabbing something light. I can already guess a few orders before they reach the counter: Americano, no sugar. Oat milk latte. Triple shot espresso. After a while, you develop an instinct \u2014 a sixth sense for matching faces to their favorite drinks.<\/p><p>Mid-morning gets busier. Office workers pop in during their breaks, asking for large cappuccinos or flat whites, while others seek out our pastries or sandwiches. The pace picks up, and so does the chatter. The coffee machine hums constantly, cups clink, receipts print, and orders are called out \u2014 it\u2019s chaos, but an oddly satisfying kind. In between all this, I still find moments to chat with customers, ask how their day\u2019s going, or recommend a new blend we\u2019re trying out. These small exchanges are often the best part of the job. We\u2019re not just handing over drinks \u2014 we\u2019re part of people\u2019s routines, their stories.<\/p><p>Lunchtime brings a lull, and it\u2019s when we reset, restock, and sometimes enjoy a quick meal ourselves. But soon enough, the after-lunch crowd arrives \u2014 students looking for a second wind, freelancers looking for a quiet corner and a good cup, and people who just want to escape the afternoon heat with something iced and refreshing.
